A key aim of the government's 10 year Children's Plan is to move away from the 'no ball games' culture towards a vision for public space where children of all ages can play and young people can be more independently mobile.
Places to Go? is a national conference hosted by Sustrans, Play England, Living Streets and the National Children's Bureau in London on Tuesday 20th May 2008 and aims to explore the opportunities presented by the Children's Plan and to address some of it's challenges.
The conference will present policy and practice for professionals in planning, landscaping, play, school travel, public health, travel and transport. Participants at this unique event will examine:
- barriers to children and young people’s sustainable access to the public realm
- enabling everyday physical activity to benefit children’s health and tackle obesity
- translating the Children’s Plan into real action and practical delivery across transport, planning, public health, community, design and play sectors
- ‘child-friendliness’ as a bridging, place-shaping principle to deliver environmental, health and community benefits.
Chaired by designer Wayne Hemingway MBE, conference speakers include Kevin Brennan MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children,Young People and Families, the Rt Hon Dawn Primarolo, MP, Minister of State for Health, Jim Fitzpatrick MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, Adrian Voce, Director, Play England, Peter Lipman, Director, Liveable Neighbourhoods, Sustrans, as well as speakers from CABE, National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence and Academy of Urbanism. Children and young people’s views are also being captured through a video competition led by Young NCB, and will be presented at the event.
The conference takes place at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, Westminster, London on Tuesday 20th May 2008.

Can we get there? Video competition
Young NCB are organising a great competition for children and young people as part of the Places to Go? conference. There are 4 digital cameras and 10 pairs of cinema tickets up for grabs!
We are inviting children to tell the government and local decision makers what it’s like for them when they are walking, cycling, or taking the bus to get around their neighbourhood.
The competition: Children are asked to send in a video clip filmed on a mobile phone (or digital or video camera) telling us what it is like for children and their friends whenever they need to walk, cycle or take the bus to get around – for example when they visit friends, play, or go to school.
Entrants will be entered into a prize draw to win one of 4 digital cameras and 10 pairs of cinema tickets.
