Welcome to the twelfth issue of Sustrans' Active Travel e-bulletin.  Active Travel works with policy-makers and practitioners to promote walking and cycling as health-enhancing physical activity.

This new sheet offers a round-up of recent papers related to the built environment’s impact on health, including NICE’s guidelines on creating environments that encourage active travel and the Foresight review on tackling obesity.


>>> Leeds ULTIMAT project learns from French bike hire scheme

The new ULTIMAT project at Leeds University aims to set up a bike hire scheme to encourage and facilitate active travel among students. The project organisers recently visited Nantes University to learn about their Velocampus bike hire scheme.

This new bilingual information sheet assembles evidence demonstrating that the built environment should be designed, created and managed to encourage healthy lifestyles for the people that live in or use it. 


 >>> Walking to cycling to work reduces risk of CHD in women

Recent research has found that moderate or high levels of occupational or leisure time physical activity are associated with a reduced risk of CHD. Daily walking or cycling to work was associated with a lower risk of CHD in women.
