Walking, Cycling and Public Transport
GMPTE is developing an action plan on walking, cycling and public transport for submission as part of its second Local Transport Plan - LTP2 - in December 2005. The provisional LTP2 walking and cycling targets are:
- to reduce the rate of decline in walking to 15% reduction between 2003/4 and 2010/11
- to increase cycling by 10% between 2003/4 and 2010/11
The action plan will include measures for GMPTE to promote and make provision for walking and cycling to link up with public transport stations and stops in Greater Manchester. Work GMPTE is already undertaking includes:
- a proposed shared cycle, foot, bridle path on the Leigh Busway
- Quality Bus Corridor (QBC) pedestrian and cycling measures
- bike lockers at stations
- public transport guides to encourage leisure walking
- a cycle carriage alongside the proposed Metrolink extensions
- a walking module on interactive education website DingDing.org.uk
GMPTE is currently undertaking a consultation to help develop a better understanding of user and stakeholder priorities for walking and cycling. A workshop with internal stakeholders has already taken place and external stakeholders have sent their ideas to us. There are plans for consultation events with external stakeholders and members of the walking and cycling general public to take place in the near future.
If anyone has any comments about what work they think GMPTE should be doing to help meet LTP2 targets, please contact the GMPTE Consultation Team: Tel: 0161 242 6777, Fax: 0161 242 6057, or email consult@gmpte.gov.uk.
