Cost of Obesity
Obesity cost the Health Service £4.2bn in 2007 and the bill could stretch to £6.3bn by 2015, the Dept. of Health is warning. It published the figures recently along with a “Toolkit” for PCTs and Local Authorities to develop anti-obesity strategies
Green House Gas Emissions Cut
A 30% cut in green house gas emissions by 2020 instead of the agreed 20% target, would result in the European Union saving up to £19bn in health costs, says the report commissioned by three health and environmental non-governmental organisations. Improvement in air quality will result in less life lost to respiratory disease and fewer hospital admissions, the report says.
Physical Activity on Prescription
More than half of patients who were prescribed physical activity were more active a year later, research from Scandinavia has shown. A study of 6,300 who were given primary care prescriptions designed to improve their levels of activity shows that the proportion of inactive patients dropped from 33% to 17% after three months. Prescriptions issued by a doctor or nurse proved more effective than those issued by a physiotherapist.

GMPTE Travel Training Symposium - 13th January 2009
GMPTE has arranged a Travel Training Symposium which will take place on Tuesday 13 January 2009, at the Manchester Art Gallery. The aim of this symposium is to demonstrate the range of applications by which Travel Training can enable people to live independent lives by learning to make use of existing public transport networks. GMPTE has arranged for speakers from the USA, Austria, Sweden and Manchester City Council to present their schemes to delegates. These schemes are aimed at older people, younger children with special educational needs, and people who acquire disabilities.
